The 2008 SME/PCMIA Annual Joint Meeting is being held October 30-31 at the Hilton Garden Inn-Southpointe, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.  During this two-day event, there will be four technical sessions covering Mine Rescue and Recovery, New Technology, Carbon Mitigation and Emissions, and Mine Seals.

Thursday's Keynote speakers include James F. Roberts, CEO, Foundation Coal Corporation and Shane Perry, Mining Engineer, John T. Boyd Company.  Robert A. Full, Chief, Allegheny County Department of Emergency Services will be the Friday Keynote, and Dr. George W. Luxbacher, SME President and Vice President-Operations, Glenn Springs Holdings Inc. will provide the luncheon address.

The Mining Industry Career Fair will take place on Thursday afternoon, October 30.  Coal companies, mining consultants, equipment manufacturers, regulatory agencies and others will be in attendance.  Students are encouraged to attend and bring along their resumes.  There will be summer and permanent employment opportunities available.

The money from our Joint Meeting finances projects and awards that promote mining.

  PCMIA provides:

  • a $2,000 Donald S. Kingery Student Scholarship,
  • a $750 Student Scholarship,
  • a $500 Scholarship to the Pennsylvania Coal Queen,
  • and several other recognition awards.

  The SME provides:

  • a $1,000 Pennsylvania State University Student Award
  • and a $1,000 West Virginia University Student Award.

  PCMIA/SME jointly award:

  • $1,750 for College Senior Student Design Project Awards,
  • $1,050 for Science Fair Project Awards,
  • and a $500 Teacher's Grant
These awards would not be possible without the support of companies affiliated with mining.
